ATV Types
Little is known about one of our favorite powersport machines – ATVs. They are quite specific machines that are not so well known as motorcycles are. However, once you get on a four-wheeler, you can rest assured you are going to love it, too! They are machines that require special attention and good maintenance. ATVs come in different sizes and shapes and they can be used for many different purposes. One of the most common uses are racing, recreation, hobby, sightseeing, hunting, military, farming, etc. Another interesting fact is that besides the well known four-wheel model, ATVs are also available with three, six or even eight wheels. Also, there is a great variety of engine sizes. They range from 50cc (for some youth models) and reach up to 700cc Sport quads, 800cc Utility ATVs, and SxS' going over 1,000cc.
The size of most engines is measured in Cubic Centimeters, or "cc". This measures the volume of the cylinder. For multiple cylinder engines, the "cc" measurement is of all cylinders combined.
Aside from the number of wheels and different sizes of ATVs, there is also a distinct difference in ATVs based on its intended application. The most popular types of 4-wheel ATVs are the 4-wheel drive Utility ATVs and Sport ATVs
1. Utility ATVs:
Those ATV types usually have short travel suspension, a big engine and more accessories for working or hunting. You can easily see them in industries like agriculture and farming, where a lot of terrain work is being done. Also, hunters or hikers who carry heavy gear on off-road terrains use them. Recently, another popular application has become - resort commuting, recreational sports or even moving around in private properties.
2. Sport ATVs
Sport ATVs usually range between 250CC and 700CC. These all-terrain vehicles are lightweight and have a lot of suspension to handle jumps, bumps and turns. These four tracks were constructed to be easily modified, and they also have numerous accessories that give you the option to switch between different style and performance. Sport ATVs are meant to be much quicker thus they are much lighter than the rest of the ATV models, this is why they are not utilized for transporting heavy equipment. Moreover, overweighting a sport ATV may result in a failure. Each ATV producer has a recommended weight that can go on a certain machine, this is why we recommend checking the owner’s manual for the most accurate information.
3. Side by Side
Side by side ATVs are also known as SxS or Rhino’s. They look pretty much like golf carts but have the suspension of a sports ATV and have with a bigger engine. Those models are very well balanced with regards to lightweight and load capacity. Therefore, it is able to carry on board more than two passengers. In addition to this, they are supplied with extreme suspension and a short wheelbase. Rhino is the ATV model, which is allowed to be road registered in some states. It is also popular as the “pit vehicle” at some specific races and events. SxSs are also well applied in military and firefighting activities.
4. Children’s ATVs
Children’s or Youth’s ATVs are the smallest models. They usually have a 50CC to 125CC engine size. In most cases they are supplied with a small suspension with a powerless engine and an automatic transition (or no gears at all). They are also smaller in size and limited in load weights that do not exceed 100 lb to 150 lb depending on the make and model.
