How to Jumpstart a Car

Unfortunately, each and every one of us (the car owners) has been in a situation in which the car won’t start due to a dead battery. That is a result of a few most common reasons, either because the car has stayed outside in the cold for too long, we forgot to turn off the lights, we didn’t drive for a couple of weeks or simply because the battery is already several years old and needs changing. In such situations, the battery doesn’t have enough power to turn on the car. Hence, you need to either jump start your vehicle, using another car with jump starting cables or use a jump starter to start your car. Don’t worry if the other car is a different battery group than yours, what matters is the proper placing of the jump starter cables.v

Here are a few simple steps that you should follow in case of you need to jump start your car:

1.Make sure to always carry jumper cables

It is a good idea to buy a set of jumper cables and always carry them in your car, especially if you live somewhere where it gets cold for long periods.

2.Both vehicles should be shut down

Turn the ignitions off, place both vehicles in Neutral or Park gear and for further safety engage the parking brakes as well.

3. The red clip should be on “Positive”

Take the Red clip and attach it to the positive terminal of the battery. You will recognize it by the “POS” or “+” sign on it. Also, it should be slightly bigger than the negative terminal.

4. The other red clip should be attached to the positive terminal of the other car

5. Then, attach one of the black clips to the negative terminal to the other car battery.

6. The final black clip should be attached to a metal plate that is far from the battery.

A good example is one of the metal plates that holds the hood open. The metal plate has to be unpainted

Check out the scheme below of how the cables should look like:

7. Start the supplemental vehicle and let its engine working for a few minutes

Give it a couple of tries because it might not start at once and leave the other car’s engine working for a longer period if necessary
